Need tips for choosing professionals in the wedding industry? Here is one of our favorites!

Tips for Choosing a Wedding Photographer

Experience Level - Has this person photographed other weddings? Does he/she do this for a living or for fun? In this industry, photographers come and go daily. Many people who own a digital camera believe that they can easily deliver a wedding. Experience counts here on a one time, one chance event such as this. A brand new photographer may be fairly talented and everyone has to start somewhere, but do you want to trust your once in a lifetime event to a newcomer? Their experience should show in their work and in the way they work with people.

Presentation matters! If a professional photographer can not present numerous and full wedding albums of weddings from start to end, telling the wedding day story, you may want to strongly reconsider using his/her services. Anyone can photograph a few good photos and highlight them from a few dozen weddings, but can they photograph an entire wedding with the same quality and style? Finally, you can always check with the Better Business Bureau for complaints and ask for referrals of their most recent weddings and ask them about their experiences.

Photographic Style - Are the images that you are shown, what you would like to see? Can you picture yourself photographed the same way? Is there a satisfactory mix in different styles? There are "buzz" words flying about everywhere about photojournalism, formal, classic, contemporary, candid, illustrative and so on. All colorful adjectives aside, do you like what you see? Does the work of the photographer suit your desired style?

Truth in Advertising – Read the package contents and understand it, ask questions. Know what items are included, time allotted, overtime charge costs, costs for proofs or negatives (digital files) and ????? Also, is this the photographer that will be photographing your wedding or will they send in who ever is available? Don't be shocked, this happens more often than you can imagine. Many studios have numerous photographers. Be sure to ask and be certain that you know which photographer is going to be there and see HIS/HER work and meet them. Don't let a salesman sell you anyone but the actual photographer of the work you are viewing!

Personality - Is the photographer that you meet someone that you can get along with? Is the "chemistry" there? People have walked away from hairstylists and tailors for less. This is a person that you are going to spend most of the day with. Could you handle it? Does he or she seem service oriented and a people person? Will they be smiling with you..........all day? Will they draw out the emotions desired and deliver them in your images?

Appearance - Ask the photographer how he/she intends to dress. The last thing that you want is a conflict at the wedding about the photographer wearing a sweatshirt and jeans with sneakers at your favorite country club. Is this person well groomed? It is after all, your wedding!

Price Range - Although, the last thing you want to do is shop by price, is this person within your budget? If not, is he or she worth the difference? A lot of times we tend to surpass our budget constraints to get what we really want. If you see and like it, you'll find a way. In any case, make sure you understand what everything costs, including your album!

Delivery - How long does it take to get your proofs back, your finished album, your bridal portrait, etc.? Go ahead and ask. Some photographers take months to deliver your proofs. Be sure of how long things take to turn around. Also, how are they delivered to you? Prints? DVD? Online? All of the above?

Offering - Whether it's a la Carte or packages, do you understand what you get in your contract? Is there any room for changes and will it cost to do so? Sometimes the packages are fixed, sometimes they can be customized, in any case, ask. How much time will he/she spend? What if you need more time? Are the images edited? What if you want them in Black and White as well as color? Make sure that you know what's coming and what your limitations are. For example, some photographers offer you a DVD of your images, but you can not legally print from this DVD, only view the images. You may have thought that you were getting the images with copyright release to you to print on your own. If the photographer is offering credits towards certain items such as an album, do you understand what the credits are worth? Will the credits cover the entire cost of what you believe you are getting?

Contract - Do you understand the contract? Is it fair? Is everything spelled out? When it comes down going to court, only what is WRITTEN really counts, not what was promised. Make sure that you have no doubts before signing. Read it ALL. What about deposits and payments?

References - A personal reference is always the best and people love to talk. Get a list of references from the photographer and check them out personally. A photographer who doesn't have references or is afraid to give them to you may not be the person that you need to hire. Most should be willing to offer these and make them recent weddings, not just one here and there spread out over a multiple year period. One last place to find an excellent photographer is to ask other long time vendors that you may already be working with.

Brad Buckles & Lance Armstrong 100miles

Brad Buckles & Lance Armstrong - Livestrong 100 miles!

Sunday 6/21 Fathers Day LIVESTRONG Challenge Seattle 100 Miles around and thru Seattle Washington

LET'S GO, Brad Buckles-Seattle!

I need your help, support & any fundraising possible. Even if it is a dollar. I don't care. If I can spend Fathers day riding 100 miles, you can help me with a few dollars. It is for cancer, it is in the name of my Mom. She has, is enduring breast cancer. I have cancer in my direct family. I have experienced, second hand, this disease.

Please help any way that you can :)

Brad Buckles Riding a GT Carbon frame (for those that ask) I am looking forward to this race/fight on Sunday!!!

Here is a LIVESTRONG posting from thier blog.

Show us your spirit! SEATTLE ROCKS!

The LIVESTRONG "Show Us Your Spirit" Rally is underway! The 'prize' is a City message and 'tweet' from Lance Armstrong, but most importantly: bragging rights over the other LIVESTRONG Challenge cities in terms of who has the best spirit!

What do we need to do? For the next two weeks, up to May 7, 2009, we need to raise as much money as possible, and bring on as many new participants as we can!

I KNOW that as the newest – and first – 2009 event city of the LIVESTRONG Challenge Series, that we can also be the first in registration and fundraising!

Let's compare the other Challenge Cities (this is where we throw down the gauntlet)

What does Austin have? Longhorns? "Hook 'Em"? What the heck does that mean? What does Philly have? A cracked bell and humidity? Rocky? Cream cheese? What does San Jose have? High tech? Heat and earthquakes?

... but ...

What does Seattle have? Clean air, snow-capped mountains, the ocean, lakes, hills, forests, a huge cycling and running community, and an amazing group of LIVESTRONG people with big hearts and relentless fundraising energy!

(Call me biased.)

The excitement is definitely building on all sides! The course route is set, the weather is getting warmer – but we need you to put Seattle on the LIVESTRONG map!

We welcome all Seattleites and out-of-towners to this great event, and LIVESTRONG Challenge participants will enjoy an unforgettable event! The course will take advantage of all aspects of Seattle – from starting under the Space Needle, to riding through downtown, to closing off a floating bridge for the riders, to taking in the beautiful lakes, hills, mountains and forests that form our topography. This truly will be a unique, fun and challenging ride.

So, go ahead, Seattle! Let's pick a fight with cancer!

Let's show Austin, Philly and San Jose who really is number one!

Let's put ourselves on the map! Sign up for the Challenge in Seattle, and FUNDRAISE, FUNDRAISE, FUNDRAISE!

Gooooo, Seattle & Goooo, Brad Buckles!

Bridal Show convention in Minneapolis (BSPI)

This week I have had the opportunity to attend and help organize one of the greatest gatherings in the wedding industry.

60 Bridal show producers, representing hundreds of bridal shows, from all over the world have come to gether to discuss the wedding industry. Everything is on the agenda from bridal trends, fashion, marketing and of course the economy.

The best minds of the industry have indicated that although there are drastic changes in the industry this year, brides are getting married and they are "JUST" booking later in the year than in times past.

THURSDAY nights a great night to have marriage ceremony, have a reception!

According to many brides and wedding professionals that I am talking with lately. Thursday night is becomming the new Saturday night, most important wedding day in demand.

Facilities have the date open, always. Wedding professionals are always open and willing to make it worth your while if you would like to book them. And it get the party started before the weekend really starts. For brides, you can affor to take a day or two off and enjoy a little honeymoon downtime before friends have to be back to work on Monday.

It will become much more popular in the months to come. We feel the need to spread the information as fast as possible because we are here for you...Always.

The Choice Is Yours, In Reality and In Life - ENJOY IT!

The Choice Is Yours, In Reality and In Life - ENJOY IT! I made the decision early last year to enjoy life. To not let anything get to me anymore.

I meet tens of thousands of brides every year at the Tacoma, Bellevue and Lynnwood Wedding Expos and over in Hawaii at the Hawaii Bridal Expo. I challenge them constantly to enjoy the process. Enjoy life!

We are all a great big family. At a wedding we participate in this reality by celebrating the uniting of husband and wife. We get together and we throw a big party as a family.

The last several months have awakened me! Im sure that it is safe to say we have been nervous, worried, and little scared about all the changes and uncertainty.

But I choose to be inspired, Why...? I look at this time to celebrate a new dawn. The coming of change.... whatever the outcome. We need to turn to each other, talk to friends, and families - we're all part of several families and "friends are the family we choose for ourselves". Celebrate the differences in yourself and those around you. Enjoy the life you are living and those you are living it with!

May we all be grateful for what we have and celebrate by sharing even more.

Enjoy Life!

A good tip for selecting a photographer is to look at pictures they have taken, this can give you a good idea of their creative style and will tell you if you're a good match. Some photographers also offer videography if this is something your interested in make sure you select a company that can meet both of those needs.

Hawaiian Wedding Photography Planner

The number one most important thing is to do your home work on your ceremony, reception, scenic and formal picture taking locations. If you are not from Hawaii, you could go to a bookstore or online, and read up on locations that you might have in mind, and consider other locations as well. It's nice to look at photos, but we recommend that you actually read about locations more in depth, and speak with people who have intimate knowledge of specific locations. This can be difficult, but your hard work will definitely be worth it. Understand that everyone has differing perceptions, so take the time to perhaps get a second opinion if you can.

Pre-planning is key

The planning stages are where you lay down a solid foundation for excellent wedding photos and video. Location is very important. Does your ceremony site have a nice area for formal shots, ie is the altar area inside the church pretty, and is the background dark or well lit? Is the outside area nice, and is the lighting good? Are there strong bright spots in the area that you want to shoot at the TIME OF DAY you will be shooting? Is the area in deep shade? What you want ideally is light shade with a background that is hope- fully not brighter than where the people are standing. That can be a tall order when your ceremony is outdoors at 1pm, but do your best to make the most out of your location. You don't generally want to situate yourselves with the sun behind your back, that can be disasterous for photos and especially video. There are times when back lighting can be very dramatic, hence the need for professional advice for tricky situations. Are there nice flowering plants that will be in the shots? Red torch ginger is a very beautiful and striking background. Many hotels have nice tall red ginger for that purpose. The green and red goes very well with traditional black and white dress. There are many gorgeous outdoor locations available to you for no charge, and many elegant locations that cost a considerable amount.

Additional Location?

Do you have time to shoot at a scenic location? That is highly recommended. So, if possible, leave enough time in between, before or after your ceremony & reception for a different location with either seascapes or a waterfall or gorgeous foliage and beautiful landscapes The effort is worth it. You might consider shooting pre-nuptial photos so you are not feeling rushed on your wedding day. Hopefully the weather and lighting is nice on the actual day. That is an uncontrollable factor, and hence the value of pre-nuptial photos before the actual day. If the weather is bad on the day of your wedding, it is nice to have an optional backup location that is workable on a rainy day. Arrangements must be made in advance for hotels. If there is no need that day, some hotels will not charge you anything, or charge only a nominal fee for the backup reservation.

Advice on indoor ceremony & reception

Be aware of any restrictions against flash &/or lighting and movement of videographer/photographer if your ceremony is at a church. This is extremely important. Also, if having your reception at a hotel or other formal facility, you should let your emcee know they need to forwarn your videographer whenever he or she is going to launch into the program, or say anything that you want videotaped. Give your photographer and videographer a copy of your program as far in advance as possible. Give them specific instructions in writing, highlighted, on their copy of the program. Ask them if they have questions, and if you make sudden changes, let them know as soon as you can. You need to create a pleasant relationship with both, and you should choose them not only for their work, but also for their "bedside manner", and ability to communicate and articulate.

It is so important to feel completely comfortable, especially with your photographer. This is not a day to leave to chance. Once you have chosen your photographer and videographer, it is advised to relax, and trust them. You need to maintain your own energy level, stay centered and allow it all to happen. Choosing the right people to capture your wedding gives you the freedom to really enjoy a wedding day that is spontaneous and elegant, with the least amount of stress possible.
