Do you want to trim your catering budget?

Here are 5 surprises you may encounter with your caterer.

Surprise # 1
Taxes and gratuity add up – read carefully the terms in your contract. The finest print may say “plus plus” which means tax plus 20 percent gratuity is included.

Surpise # 2
Suppling and bringing in your own liquor and wine isn’t really a saver. Caterers charge corkage fees (can be a few dollars a bottle) to serve the alcohol you provided.

Surprise #3
If an “outside” cake is brought in - your caterer may have a cake cutting fee.

Surprise # 4
The larger the party, the more leverage you have in getting a per-person discount.

Surprise # 5
A cocktail party served with hors d’oeuvres will be more expensive than a seated dinner. Caterers have to overestimate hors d’oeuvres in order to have plenty available since they are less filling.

Do your numbers before you select and decide on a style of service! Make sure to ask for hidden fees. Avoid any surprises that you can – ask questions.
