Jayne and Kahele's "Wedding of a Lifetime"

On Monday, January 16, 2009 at 7:30pm, OC-16 will feature a one-hour "Wedding of a Lifetime" special.

Couples had to write stories to describe why they were deserving for the free wedding which was valued at over $81,000. On September 8, 2008, the three finalists were featured on TV and the winners, Jayne and Kahele were announced.

With less than two months to plan everything, it was a whirlwind of fun and excitement for everyone involved, and I'm very happy that I had the privilege and honor of being their wedding coordinator and helping them make their dreams come true.

Hawaii Peacock Theme Wedding by HAWAII WEDDINGS AND EVENTS

Creating a theme that is unique to you is what makes your wedding extra special!

Recently I had the pleasure of helping my clients create their "Peacock" theme wedding.

Peacock feathers were incorporated into the family table centerpieces and accents of peacock feathers were tastefully included in table number signs, candy buffet signs, the client's monogram logo sticker for the candy buffet bags as well as reserved signs.

The custom monogram was used to make two gobos which projected their initials behind the head table and also on the dance floor.

A purple irredescent linen, otherwise known as peacock crush as it has tinges of teal in it adorned the guest tables and family tables. The main colors were purple and teal, but gold accents complimented the very rich look.

The entire front end of the ballroom had pipe and drape and lighting effects changed throughout the evening, including the ballroom's chandeliers.

The candy buffet was revealed later in the evening with the bride and groom having the first chance to prepare their candy bags with the bride happily picking up her favorite rock candy sticks which were also in her wedding theme colors.

Hawaii Weddings and Events offers Candy Buffets!

The latest trends of featuring a candy buffet is now possible without all of the hassles!

Hawaii Weddings and Events provides the glass containers, candy (dependent on color scheme, location (ie: outdoors/indoor) and personal favorites, labels for each item displayed, bags and ties for the candy, scoopers and tongs for your guests' use and staff to set-up, monitor and replenish the candy as needed and breakdown)

Pricing is dependent upon number of guests, number of hours the candy buffet is open (we suggest "unveiling" during your reception) and of course the type of candy that is used.

Hawaii Event Group celebration for 2800 guests!

Yes, that is not a typo, 2800 guests attended a corporate event that the Hawaii Event Group (HEG) coordinated last night.

What is HEG and why am I writing about it? Actually, I wear two hats, one as the Owner and Director of Special Events for Hawaii Weddings and Events, and secondly as the President of the Hawaii Event Group (HEG) that is comprised of industry professionals that have their own businesses but come together as a co-hesive and dynamic team to do large scale productions.

Yesterday's celebration featured two of Hawaii's top entertainers "Kapena" and "Willie K" and even featured movies with popcorn made right on location The company picnic was for families, so we had a tumblebus, inflatable slides and jumpers, tattoos, face painting, zoo games and what could be better on a hot day, shave ice!

As there were other events taking place in the same vicinity parking was going to be limited so we took a proactive approach in managing the situation and had seven trolleys transporting guests back and forth from another parking lot. As the location is spread out into two separate lawns and has very little light and power sources, we also brought in string lights, airstars and several generators to meet the needs of the event.

Stay tuned for more amazing, fun and stress-free celebrations!

RENEWAL OF VOW CELEBRATIONS BY HAWAII WEDDINGS AND EVENTS

Helping you celebrate life's celebrations is what Hawaii Weddings and Events is all about.

Recently we've found that Renewal of Vows is becoming increasing more popular and we're delighted!

In June we helped a couple from Miami, Florida who had always dreamt of a Hawaii wedding but it just didn't happen. So, 15 years later they came to Hawaii and achieved their dream along with their three amazing children. Renting a private estate, they were given permission to have a nice quiet ceremony on the lawn and reception (only had 17 guests) on the lanai.

Watching the children partake in the ceremonial "sand ceremony" was fun to watch, but couldn't match the giggles that could be heard when Mom and Dad were doing that long passionate kiss for the photographer.

We just booked a surprise renewal of vows in a few weeks (yes, it can be arranged in short periods of time if you are flexible) and are looking forward to surprising the groom with his beachfront wedding.

For more information on our services please see http://www.hawaiiweddingsandevents.com/wedding_services.htm
we can customize packages to meet your every need.

Ceremony highlights from Video 21 Productions for amazing wedding!

Modern technology is simply the best! Not only does it allow you to keep in contact with friends and family from all over the world it also allows you to share information with our brides and future brides.

Yesterday I had the privilege of being coordinator for Reimi and Shawn's wedding at The Moana Surfrider, a Westin Resort. The ceremony was performed by Reverend Frank Mak with photography by Garrett Nose, music by Flute Ala Harpe, video by Video 21 Productions (see ceremony highlights at)
http://www.video21productions.com/2008/07/reimi-shawn
and beautiful flowers by Su-V Expressions.

The color scheme was garnet red and ivory, with an elegant asian theme. The head table and cake table was completely draped with red garnet satin linen, adorned with ivory satin napkins, gold chargers, beautiful printed menu cards, napkin rings and cookies/cupcakes from Hokulani bakery and ivory chaircovers with the red garnet satin sash.

The head table was elevated and had pipe and drape directly behind with hanging champagne colored draping, shimmery decorative tiles and hanging red roses and red uplights which highlighted the bride and groom as they sat on stage.

The two family tables were oval shaped tables that had tall magnificent centerpieces with willow branches and hanging white orchids strung from them with custom made ivory satin linen, red garnet table runners, mirrors, gold chargers, and the same other accents as the head table.

Red uplighting accented the sides of the room and there were three different types of centerpieces that were featured on the guest tables along with the votive candles on each table.

When the bride entered the ballroom she teared up as she saw how amazingly beautiful the room, which in turn made me tear up as well (I still cry at weddings!)

These priceless moments are why I love event planning. When the bride gives you a hug and tells you everything is perfect, what could be better than that!?!

Pictures of the wedding decor will be posted soon!

BUDGETING FOR YOUR WEDDING DAY WITH HAWAII WEDDINGS AND EVENTS

More often than not, I've found that clients haven't sat down to talk about their wedding budget.

The first thing I ask my clients is what their budget is. By defining their budget, we can define the most appropriate venue(s) selections as well as vendors, decor, etc.

Prior to starting any event planning, we always want to have a clear understanding of the goals and the budget involved so that everyone is on the same page. We will also provide constructive feedback on what can (or can't work) based on time constraints or budget.

Our years of experience and connections within the industry allows us to streamline the planning process as we can weed out the areas that are not going to work for you. For example, if you have a $2,000 flower budget, why would you spend the time meeting with a florist who has a $3,500 minimum order requirement? We pride ourselves in helping you achieve a beautiful wedding and we will offer recommendations on cost savings along the ways so you can get more for your valued dollar.

The most important aspect of your wedding is the celebration of life, love, family and friends.

Should you need assistance with preparing your budget, please check out our new consulting/budget package called "We're Engaged....now what?""

THE ULTIMATE EVENT PLANNER - HAWAII WEDDINGS AND EVENTS

Helping people create their dreams is truly one of the greatest joys in event planning.

The following review was from a bride who had her wedding for 300 guests at The Willows Restaurant. We had two hours to transform the restaurant by removing all of their chairs and bringing in natural wood chiavari chairs, special linens and vibrant colors to enhance the environment.

The following review from my bride, Kristi, was featured on http://www.merchantcircle.com/business/Hawaii.Weddings.and.Events.808-782-4514

"I decided to hire a wedding planner because I work a ton of hours and didn't have the time to plan an elaborate wedding. I wanted a wedding planner with a lot of experience and someone I felt confident in that could take my vision, bring it to life, and make it even better than what I envisioned...Dianna did exactly that. Dianna was always punctual, professional, and extremely easy to work with. I think I'm very hard to please but Dianna always seemed to amaze me with her attention to detail, quick follow up, and above and beyond efforts. I never felt worried about my wedding day because of the complete trust and faith I had in Dianna. My wedding was perfect and I had so many people telling me that my wedding was the best wedding they'd ever been to and even months after the wedding, I still have people raving about it. I have the utmost respect and admiration for Dianna and would recommend her to anyone planning an event. Dianna is the best!"

We have been encouraging brides to research their vendors prior to attending the wedding expo and to start securing their dates, otherwise they may find that the vendors they want are not available.

Below you'll find a picture from the last Expo which featured a custom made shadow box table filled with gerber daisies as well as an Asian inspired table. We will not have a booth at this years expo as we have events to attend to as well as appointments with some of our destination brides.

THE KAHALA HOTEL AND RESORT - HAWAII WEDDINGS AND EVENTS

The Kahala Hotel and Resort is a beautiful oceanfront property just outside of Waikiki on the other side of Diamond Head.

With two oceanfront gazebos, an intimate oceanfront reception room that can accommodate a maximum of 40 guests, its signature orchid wall staircase and a spectacular beach, it is a photographers dream location for it has a variety of backdrops.

My favorite room is the Waialae Ballroom as it offers you the comfort of being indoors, but has floor to ceiling glass windows that overlook the waterfall.

You may wonder why I know so much about the venue......well, prior to starting my own event planning firm, I worked there for 10 years and was the Director of Catering and Conferences Services. I still remember doing sales calls to agencies and having our own bridal showcases to promote the property.

Since leaving the resort in March 2006 to pursue my dream, I've had the privilege of servicing seven weddings at The Kahala Hotel and Resort which has been so much fun to work with my old banquet team again.

You can see some pictures of the resort at my other website

HALE KOA HOTEL - HAWAII WEDDINGS AND EVENTS - LAS VEGAS THEME WEDDING

I just received pictures from a Las Vegas Theme wedding that was held at the Hale Koa Hotel's luau gardens in September 2007.

The photos were incredible and truly captured the essence of all the special touches the creative bride had prepared for her special day. Event design is one of my passions and I get equally excited when I have a client that has really put alot of time in effort to creating their theme wedding.

Garnet red and chocolate brown were the theme colors, which were carried out through the use of colored linens, chair covers, napkins, flowers, feathers, custom made frames that had the couples pictures, wrapped poker cards and printed programs.

My client works long hours and I found out that she was doing alot of her wedding planning late in the evening. Considering we only had two hours to set up for the 370 guest wedding which also included a photobooth, hanging lanterns, red uplights, chiavari chairs and special linens for the head table, cake table, reception area and candy buffet, my client selected the "For My Peace of Mind - 90 Day Countdown to a Stress-free wedding day" to help wrap up the details and work out all of the logistics.

The Peace of Mind package has become our most popular package for it allows the bride to still plan her event, but when it gets closer and everything starts getting into the "crunch period" the bride has a partner to help keep keep things on track and ensure nothing has been overlooked.

This is where an experienced planner really makes a difference. The ability to coordinate, manage and communicate with all of the vendors (referred to as teammates) is critical as timing is the most difficult aspect to learn.

"Times" Magazine features LiveInternetWeddings.com

It always a pleasure to see a business evolve! Live Internet Weddings was just featured in the latest edition of "Times Magazine" in an article about webcasting.

For those of you that have family or friends that aren't able to make it to your destination wedding, it is a perfect option to still let them share the experience.

Our most recent wedding was for a couple from Dallas, Texas, of which the groom was from Louisiana and the bride was from Poland. Setting a 10am wedding ceremony time, the couple included the website link in their invitations and invited their family and friends to "share" their special day LIVE as the wedding was broadcast from the Turtle Bay Resort.

Modern technology truly makes dreams come true!

HAWAII WEDDINGS AND EVENTS - PEACE OF MIND AT LANIKUHONUA

Lanikuhonua - Where Heaven Meets the Earth is an amazing so I'm very happy to have the opportunity to do yet another destination wedding there!

The beautiful oceanfront location is like giving an artist a brand new canvas to create their masterpiece. As the bride is able to bring in all of her own vendors (catering, rentals, etc.) you are only limited by your imagination.

As there are many logistics involved in off-premise catering, our "For Your Peace of Mind - 90-Day Countdown to a Stress-Free" day is our most popular package for it ensures every intricate detail is taken care of and nothing is overlooked so you can enjoy a truly magical day.

UH Warriors BCS Bowl Game!

You're probably wondering, what does this have to do with wedding planning? Well, absolutely nothing! I always encourage my clients to take a few days off from their wedding planning to enjoy other things in life, and this is a good time to celebrate!

Yes, it truly has been an early Christmas gift not only for UH fans, but for the entire state of Hawaii.

It's history in the making and you can't help but get caught up on all the excitement after seeing the final game against Washington and the good new about the Sugar Bowl!

Even my daughter who is currently in San Diego and transferring to UH in the Spring said she was yelling at the TV. Interestingly enough, I just found out she knows Colt Brennan, the QB, who she met at Sandy Beach, saying he is such a laid back chill guy and she even went to his birthday party this summer!

This week has been surreal, the UH Warriors believed and achieved, and Hawaii couldn't be more proud.

"Oh man, I love this team..i'm a fan number one," says Mac Telefoni, a UH Football Fan.

"We're ready," says Kalilimoku.

And a berth into a BCS Bowl Game means big bucks for the University.

Last year, boise state received $4.5 million for qualifying.

And all other WAC teams got $800,000.

So it's not only a great day for the state, but the entire conference.

Dianna Shitanishi supports KHON2FOX Lokahi Giving Fund Project

Happy Holidays!

As the holiday season has arrived again, I am truly grateful for my treasures which is my family and friends. No, I don't drive a big fancy car, or have the latest in technology or even my own home for that matter, but at the end of the day, what really is most important to me is having a roof over my head, clothes on my back, being able to provide for my children and helping those that are less fortunate.

As Chapter President of the National Association of Catering Executives (NACE) I got our association involved in adopting a family through the Lokahi Giving Fund Project. It is a very humbling experience as many of the items on their "wish list" are basic necessities such as a blanket, a pillow, clothes and shoes and our participating members really felt the "true spirit" of the holidays while shopping for our family.

Our chapter has participated the past two years and Dianna will be spearheading this year's participation as well. For more information on how you may participate in this program please see http://www.khon2.com/features/lokahigivingproject/10679251.html

The Lion King - memories of Christine Yasunaga's wedding at The Kahala

This afternoon we had the opportunity to see "The Lion King" musical which has been performing in Honolulu since September. December 9th will be the last show, and for those of you that may not have seen it and have the opportunity, it is truly worth every penny and more!

Seeing the show brought back memories of when islander Christine Yasunaga, from the original cast of the Lion King, had her wedding at The Kahala Mandarin Oriental, Hawaii (now The Kahala Hotel and Resort) when I was still the Director of Catering and Conference Services before starting my own business http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/2001/Jan/05/showbiz.html

Christine was marrying the drummer, Darryl Pellegrina and three members of the cast also sang acapella for their wedding ceremony which was held at the Koko Head Gazebo. One of the singers was from Jamaica and I'll never forget how he said he needed to come back to Hawaii to "get the creative juices flowing" as he said while he was here he was able to relax and think as in New York the pace is 24/7.

Halekulani wedding with Eugene Kam Photography

Yesterday I had the privilege of being the "day of" coordinator for a couple from Los Angeles, California and working with Eugene Kam Photography.

Their intimate ceremony was held on the Garden Lawn and the reception dinner would be at the adjacent Garden Terrace which was perfect for their needs.

Oddly enough, having done many outdoor weddings which have been threatened by inclement weather, my couples have been blessed with what I call "windows of opportunity."

Yesterday was no exception.....a rain call was made at 2:30pm and as the skies looked better, we chose to stay outside. Although cloudy, it was still looking good up until about 15 minutes prior to the ceremony, so I told my vendors we'll be fine until 4:30pm (ceremony was scheduled for 4pm)

We were still awaiting the arrival of some of their guests, but feeling the breeze and the moisture that you sense in the air, the photographer and I knew we would not be able to hold out much longer. With that said, all of the immediate family were now present and we immediately started the ceremony.

The ceremony was perfect and the couple was able to do their signing outside along with some family pictures until just about 4:34pm when the rains came. With experienced professionals, such as Eugene Kam and his assistant Joy, Kit Samoson as well as the Halekulani team, everyone started to make adjustments for picture taking, relocating the piano and adjusting the set-up on the terrace and so as not to let the rain put a damper on anything.

During the cocktail period a glimse of the sun could be seen and Dianna told the phtoographer that they'll be able to take pictures on the beach with the bride and groom. There was still a light shower, but Dianna said "five minutes" and you'll be fine.......and they were.

Experience and Faith do count!

Lanikuhonua "Where Heaven Meets Earth"

Lanikuhonua has become one of the most popular wedding and special event locations due to the wide open space, beautiful sunsets, pristine beach and the ability to really create the event that YOU want as you have the ability to bring in your own caterer, equipment, tent, etc. so you are only limited by your imagination (and sometimes budget).

Off-premise catering does involve alot more details in planning as you literally have to order every piece of equipment, plate, glassware, chair, etc. that needs to be on-site, which is one of the reasons that they require you have an on-site coordinator.

Hawaii Weddings and Events has a great package for Lanikuhonua brides entitled "For Your Peace of Mind." It is basically a wrap-up package which will double check everything that you've done to ensure that not only your vendors are confirmed, but that all of your equipment needs, tent, chair, table sizes, linen sizes, etc. are precise and will also prepare a floor plan to let you see how your event will be laid out.

For those brides that don't have as much time to plan, they will find our Saavy Bride package to be great as it helps to get your vendors in place and offers a team relationship as well as of course, on-site coordination for the day.

You only have one chance for lifetime memories.........invest in yourself by hiring the only event professional in Hawaii that is not only a Certified Professionsal Catering Executive (CPCE) and Certified Meeting Planner (CMP)

The Royal Hawaiian Hotel

For those of you that may not have heard, the Royal Hawaiian Hotel announced today that it would be closing for renovations June 1, 2008.

The "Pink Palace of the Pacific" has always held a special place in my heart. I was fortunate to work at the hotel from 1992 to 1996 prior to going to the Kahala Mandarin Oriental, Hawaii (now The Kahala Hotel and Resort).

The reason I actually left the Royal Hawaiian Hotel was simply because I had found my passion for Catering and I didn't foresee the Director of Catering or Catering Manager leaving anytime soon. Fortunately my gamble paid off as I started in Food and Beverage at the Kahala and then moved to Catering Manager, Director of Weddings and Director of Catering and Conference Services and now the proud owner of Hawaii Weddings and Events.

After being away from the beautiful historic property for over 10 years I now returned on-site as the coordinator for two beautiful weddings September 15 and 16, 2007, of which both had receptions in the Monarch Room

Considering I would have waited 9 years for an opening at the Royal, it was fun to be on-site and work side by side along the banquet manager, banquet staff and catering team that I used to work with. When I pass by the front desk I remember the short period of time that I actually worked as a Night Auditor on the graveyard shift.

With many fond memories........

How do you find your Hawaii wedding planner?

Aloha and congratulations to all, this is such an exciting time in your life!

How does one find a wedding planner? The majority of our clients either find us through our website, are referrals from past or current clients, other vendors that we continually work with and venues that we have done events with. Word of mouth recommendations are the best forms of advertising as we all know someone does not give out your name if they had a bad experience.

Now that you've narrowed down your searches, how do you determine who is right for you?

These are some of the key questions to either ask your potential planner or to ask yourself while interviewing:

1) Is the date available (I've seen clients arrange meetings with hotels for a site inspection only to find out the date they want was not available).

2) What is your experience level (have they been doing this for years, or did they do a friend's wedding and decided to get into planning?)

3) As a certified professional special event planner, I always ask clients what their expectations are in a coordinator (or planner). I've found that everyone has different expectations and/or interpretations, so it is always best to start off with everyone on the same page.

4) I also ask what type of budget they are working with as well as how much time they have to devote to their planning. Understanding their budget and how much time they have will help determine what services may best suit their needs.

3) Do they willingly provide you references from clients?

4) How do you prefer to communicate? Does this match your preferred method?

5) Ask for examples of their work (not just pictures, but what type of information they include in their timeline, etc.)

6) Do you feel comfortable with this person? Are they responsive?
7) Do you have an emergency kit?
8) How well do you work with the venue and/or other vendors?

These are just a few of the many questions that you may have, but may help you with narrowing down your choices. You only have one chance for everything to go well for your special day, so experience does count!

Do you have a wedding emergency kit?

One of my favorite quotes is "failing to plan is planning to fail." I'm a firm believer that if you take the time you need to do your planning (in whatever is important in your life) you will be successful in anything that you set your mind to.

Having a wedding emergency kit is just one of the many steps that Hawaii Weddings and Events takes in preparation for your wedding day. I couldn't tell you how many times someone needed a safety pin to fix something that broke just minutes before the wedding!

Be prepared for the "unexpected" and everything will be just fine.

Hawaii Weddings and Events - "Going Green" - one of the latest trends

Dianna K. Shitanishi, CPCE, CMP is currently attending the National Association of Catering Executives (NACE) Educational Conference in Houston, Texas which offers continued education for catering and event professionals.

"Going Green" is not only a trend in the catering and meeting industry with conference materials posted on-line, printed materials on recycled paper and recycling stations, but is also one of the fastest growing trends in the wedding industry.

Examples of going "green" include:

Choosing either a bridal gown or bridesmaids dresses that may be worn again to parties.

Organized car pools or transportation to reduce the number of vehicles transporting guests.

Having ceremony and reception in one location.

Enjoying locally grown organic food.

Using fine china and linen napkins instead of throwaways.

Making a donation to a charity in the name of your guests instead of having favors.

Using recycled paper for invitations and placecards.

Using websites for posting information for guests versus printed materials.

Re-use ceremony florals for ceremony or potted plants versus flowers.

Using natural backdrops

Decorate with locally grown fruits and vegetables.

Using fans instead of bouquets for bridesmaids.

Acoustic music

Digital photography over film.

Celebrating a wedding with global awareness is a satisfying way to begin a life of commitment together and also an important way for all of us to provide even more environmentally correct business practices.

Tips on selecting your Hawaii Wedding Planner

You've searched the internet and now you've narrowed down your selections, but just how do you go about selecting your Hawaii wedding planner?

In addition to the usual list of questions that you may find from the many "wedding worksheets or questionnaires" some other factors for you to consider are:

1) How responsive are they?
2) What is their background and experience level?
3) Are they listening to what you want or giving you their ideas?
4) Does their pricing work with your budget?
5) Ask about examples of how they may "trouble shoot" at an event.
6) Do they have a calming presence and make you feel better after talking to them, or do you feel more stressed out than ever?
7) When discussing your event or budget is honest feedback provided or is everything "no problem, we can do that?"

Planning should be a fun and exciting time for you!

Live Webcast your Hawaii Wedding or Special Event - Live Internet Weddings

Destination weddings can now have the best of both worlds! For brides and grooms that have chosen Hawaii for their destination wedding, they can have their wedding in Paradise and still share it with family and friends back home.

Today's modern techology allows vendors such as Live Internet Weddings the opportunity to not only capture your wedding day in video, but to be able to broadcast it over the internet for friends and family to watch the ceremony live as is happening is simply amazing!

The original concept of the Live Internet Weddings was to help bring families together, especially at life's milestone moments. In addition to providing wedding couples with a means of sharing their day, we've also had the privilege of using their services for a Star Wars birthday party that was watched by family members in Korea who were unable to attend the special occasion.

Graduations are next to come!

Sheraton Moana Surfrider wedding..........

I often ask my destination weddings why they chose Oahu for their wedding.

In some cases it is because they wanted a more intimate wedding for if they did it in their home town the event may be upwards to 400 guests instead of 30-50.

In other cases, couples are originally from Hawaii and now live in the mainland and come home as most of their family and many of their friends are still here.

Yesterday's wedding at the Sheraton Moana Surfrider featured a bride from Japan and a groom that was originally from Canada. It was truly a melting pot of guests as friends and family traveled from all over the world to share their special day. For them, Hawaii was the "center" point between their two countries and the true beauty of the day was watching the two families embrace the day and welcoming each other into their lives.

There is such a great sense of satisfaction from helping people achieve their dreams and witness such love and friendliness between so many different cultures.

Starfish Theme Wedding

Today I had a beautiful intimate wedding of 22 guests at The Kahala Hotel and Resort for a couple from California.

The color scheme was ocean blue and white and starfish were used throughout the wedding beginning with their save the date cards.

Guests were pleasantly surprised to be greeted with white tuberose leis tied with ocean blue ribbon and were impressed to find 4" starfish on their chairs that not only kept the theme of the event but served as an effective way of keeping the programs from blowing away.

Blue and white tuille adorned with three white starfish lined the aisle as the flower girls basket had starfish as well as the hairclips in the brides' hair. Ocean blue ribbon was entwined in the flower girls haku lei and wrapped around the gorgeous white calla lily bouquets held by the maid of honor and bride.

Of course, everyone in the wedding party, as well as the conch shell blower and myself (I always match my weddings) also were in different shades of ocean blue.

The sea shell wedding cake completed the picture along with starfish that adorned the cake knife and server. Arna got a great picture of the wedding rings on the starfish in the sand (can't wait to see it) along with another picture which included their invitation and save the date cards to capture their entire wedding in a storybook manner.

It is hard to describe the magnificance of such a simple affair in only words, but all of the "special touches" made for a remarkable day that everyone will always remember.

Sometimes it is hard to imagine that I actually get paid for helping to make dreams come true!

The beauty of the islands........

Destination weddings to Hawaii still continues to boom as brides from all over the country find themselves drawn to the beauty of the islands.

I recently had the pleasure to show one of my New York couples several oceanfront and garden locations on the island of Oahu. Sometimes when you live in Hawaii, you forget to take time to appreciate its beauty and it was really fun to spend the day watching their expressions as they viewed each location as if they were through the eyes of a child.

Hawaii Weddings and Events celebrates!

It's hard to imagine that a full year has passed since Hawaii Weddings and Events opened its event planning firm in 2006.

The secret to success is from the reputation of excellence, over 20 years of experience in the hospitality industry and of course word of mouth referrals are always the best!

Dianna K. Shitanishi, CPCE, CMP, not only loves event planning, but she graciously takes the time to teach others who are interested in the industry and is currently involved in developing an internship program through her local chapter of the National Association of Catering Executives (see http://nacehawaii.com)

"I truly believe you must have a passion to succeed in this industry, so I like to teach others so that they understand the reality of event planning. Many are interested in event after seeing beautiful pictures, or watching all of the bridal shows, but dont understand the complexities that can be involved in creating that vision.

I really love the creativity of event planning (especially being involved in the decor evolution) and having an opportunity to be of service to people from all over the world for their most special occasions."

The Secret - Hawaii Weddings and Event's newest package

“The Secret to a memorable and successful Hawaii wedding”
$1975 (hotel venue) or $2175 (non-hotel venue or two locations)

What is The Secret? Actually, in wedding planning there are many little secrets to successful planning that seasoned professionals have learned through their own experiences, but we’d like to share the three that are the most important ones for you to consider. Number one is having your professional key vendors in place early in the planning process (you want to make decisions based on who you want not just who is available) so basically, the secret is surrounding yourself with good people. Secondly is ensuring that your décor ideas are realistic considering the time and budget that is alloted. Lastly, the secret “allowing yourself” to entrust and relinquish some control to an experienced Hawaii wedding planner who will help you create a detailed timeline to ensure all details are covered, ensure nothing has been overlooked and to execute all the fine details.

With the above in mind, our newest package has been created for the savvy bride that really wants to plan most of her wedding and either has definitive décor ideas in mind but doesn’t know to implement it (or just has no idea what to do and needs guidance and recommendations). Ten (10) virtual consulting hours are provided “in the beginning stages of your wedding planning to help streamline the process of securing your professional vendors so you can rest assured you have the right people in place and your décor ideas have been clearly defined.

Coordinating services will commence again three months prior to the wedding day. Average planning/coordination time is 30-40 and includes in depth review of all vendor contracts (which with this package takes less time as we’ve been involved in helping you from the beginning), ensuring all details with the venue have been finalized, assisting with preparation of detailed timeline for the day (one of the most critical elements), assisting with finalizing program for wedding, participating in final meeting with venue, rehearsal day coordinator (one hour) and on-site wedding coordinator for nine hours on event day.

Hawaii Weddings and Events welcomes Bridezillas

Why would one welcome the ever feared "Bridezilla" that has become a household word in the wedding planning world?

Personally, I think the simple translation would be "an overwhelmed or frazzled bride that just has a need that was not met."

They always say to only have one MAJOR life change at a time. When you think about it, not only are today's brides either full time students or working, they are often paying for the wedding themselves (which can bring on another stress), in the midst of changing jobs or moving and/or buying a new home.....it's no wonder they can get a little frazzled.

By understanding what the bride may be going through, you may learn how to better service your client. If you respond promptly to your bride and keep them informed if there will be some delays due to events, then they really are understanding and patient.

So, give me a bridezilla anyday......I love to see how they evolve from being a bit frazzled or not knowing where to turn, to a beautiful vibrant woman walking down the aisle and achieving her dreams.

Honolulu NACE Chapter adopts "Lokahi" Family

"Lokahi" means Unity

For the second year in a row, the Honolulu NACE Chapter has adopted a "Lokahi" family for the holidays. Last year, a family of eight was proudly sponsored with the proceeds of donations from their local membership.

When you receive a Christmas wish list that includes basic necessities such as a pillow or a blanket, it really becomes a very humbling experience. The shopping trip for the Lokahi family was the most enjoyable one of the season because it was in the true spirit of Christmas.

Tips for Wedding Planning during the Holidays

Aloha!

With the Christmas holidays just around the corner, I'd like to share a few tips for your wedding planning:

1) Many of you may be coming to Hawaii to work on your wedding planning details or to do site inspections as you start the process. Please keep in mind that this is a very busy time of year, especially for the caterers due to Christmas parties and New Year's Eve festivities so please be sure to set up an appointment in advance to ensure you are able to see the facilities and that they have allocated time for you.

I share this advice after working many years in the hotel industry and having clients show up unexpectantly only to be disappointed because the ballroom was not available for viewing and/or the staff's schedule was completely booked for the day.

2) If you're in the beginning stages of your wedding planning there is a great new Special Event Card which is being sold by the National Association of Catering Executives (NACE) which features a variety of specials (including 15% off videography packages, 10% off coordination services, 10% off at the Willows Restaurant, etc. (offers range from $50 to $500 in savings) For a complete list of current offerings see http://www.nacehawaii.com/special_event_card.html (it would also make a great Christmas gift for a friend who may be getting married!)

3) The holidays can be both a joyful and stressful time for everyone (not just brides). Keep the following in mind:

a) Take care of yourself,

b) Take control of your time and limit your commitments

c) Embrace your family and friends.

Wishing you all the best this holiday season.

"Bridezillas" Welcome Here

One may wonder what would prompt someone to welcome "Bridezillas" the infamous word that over the past few years has been used to describe difficult brides and is even showcased on a TV reality shows.

I for one, really do not think there is such a thing as a Bridezilla. Yes, everyone has their difficult days and can be moody, yes, everyone changes their minds and yes, there are people that may give you more challenges than others or have higher expectations.....there is nothing wrong with that.

In my 20+ years in the hospitality industry, I've learned to take time to LISTEN to my clients. By understanding the background of a situation or why something is important to them, you can better serve your client.

Yes, reality (usually the budget) is going to set in at times, but as a professional I take great pride in being able to offer alternatives that may still carry out their theme but in a more cost effective manner.

"Virtual" consulting was actually a means of being able to take care of the smaller more intimate weddings (especially destination weddings) that really don't need a full service planner, but just need some help getting vendors in place and being on-site for a few hours on the wedding day to ensure everything is in order.

So the next time someone says the word "Bridezilla" don't run the other way, just smile and say how may I help you?!?!

How far in advance should I book?

I'm often asked the question on how far in advance should I book my wedding or the vendors?

From past and current experience, the larger weddings seem to book about one year in advance as there are less venues available to them and the smaller ones (less than 100 guests) seem to book about nine months out. Of course, there are still those weddings that will book for next month!

The following factors should be considered:

If you have a destination wedding, or have many relatives that will be traveling from other places, more time is often better to allow your friends and family the opportunity to take time off of work and save for the trip (which often becomes a vacation).

If you have a specific date in mind, perhaps the date you met, or what I refer to as a "quirky" or popular date (ie: next year is 7-07-07 (especially since it is a Saturday) and the next one is sure to be 8-08-08, you'll need to book much earlier than the bride that just wants sometime in September or October.

Another consideration is if you are using very popular vendors such as photographers, hair and make-up, video, florists, coordinators, etc., you'll want to book earlier to get the one you WANT versus who is available.

What are some of the newest Wedding Trends for 2007?

One can only imagine what the trends will be, but after talking with caterers and wedding planners from all over the United States, the following were some of the latest:

Having at least one element that will reflect both your personal style and your relationship will make it a memorable event for your guests.

Both in secular and in religious weddings, couples often incorporate the unity candle into their ceremony. A new twist on this is the wine unity ceremony where the bride and groom pour from two separate bottles into one cup and both drink from it. Another option is using sand. In this incarnation of the unity ceremony, the bride and groom pick up a handful of sand from separate vessels and drop it into a larger vessel. This is a nice option because it is easy to incorporate other members of the family into the ritual, and great for those outdoor Hawaii weddings.

Color, geometric shapes, unique cuisine, and ethnic entertainment topped the list, with specialty linens incorporating several shades of the same color becoming increasingly popular.

Chocolate brown is the hottest color at the moment, both stylist and welcoming paired with pale blue or pink.

Square tables and varied table shapes throughout the room are replacing the traditional rounds.

A special beverage greeting for your guests as they arrive, anything from a colourful lemonade stand to martini ice bar will add a memorable touch.

Food stations, an assortment of different textures to create unique passing trays, and interactive cooking are all hot trends for the coming year.

Matching the entertainment to your choice of food is also becoming increasingly popular.

Though the wedding cake has always played a significant role in the classic wedding, many couples are looking at more personalized look using initials or cake toppers are gaining popularity again.

Whatever you decide, be sure your wedding reflects your sense of style, your relationship and works with your budget.

What does CMP stand for?

This is the second question I receive when clients look at my business card.

Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) Program
Setting the Standard of Excellence

Through the CMP Program, individuals who are currently employed in meeting management have the opportunity to pursue continuing education, increased industry involvement and industry-wide recognition by achieving the CMP designation. The requirements for certification are based on professional experience and an academic examination.

The foremost certification program of today's meetings, conventions and exhibitions industry, the CMP designation recognizes those who have achieved the industry's highest standard of professionalism.

Established in 1985, the CMP credential was developed to increase the proficiency of meeting professionals in any component or sector of the industry by:

Identifying a body of knowledge; Establishing a level of knowledge and performance necessary for certification;
Stimulating the advancement of the art and science of meeting management; Increasing the value of practitioners to their employers; Recognizing and raising industry standards, practices and ethics; Maximizing the value received from the products and services provided by Certified Meeting Professionals.

A Certification Board designated by CIC governs the program and includes one representative from each planner organization of CIC and four representatives from the supplier category. The CMP Board seeks to represent the diversity that exists within the profession and serve as a voice for stakeholders who have an interest in maintaining a high meeting industry standard.

The elite CMP community now numbers in the thousands, with representatives from every sector of the industry -- from corporations and associations to governmental and institutional organizations.

My CMP certification which was achieved in 2004 may be verified on the convention industry council website

What does CPCE stand for?

One of the most common questions I receive is what does CPCE stand for?

The National Association of Catering Executives (NACE) encourages the professional development of caterers through voluntary participation in its certification program.

Achievement of the Certified Professional Catering Executive (CPCE) designation demonstrates expertise in catering earned by taking a comprehensive examination that covers all aspects of professional catering.

The comprehensive, three-section exam which covers all aspects of catering (including on-premise or off-premise) was developed in collaboration with the Educational Institute, a nonprofit foundation of the American Hotel and Motel Association.

Goals of the examination program:

• Establish a nationally recognized standard of competence in catering.
• Promote professional commitment to excellence in catering.
• Endorse active participation in educational offerings that support the continued competency of Certified Professional Catering Executives.
• Aid employers in identifying qualified catering personnel.
• Enhance the professional image of the catering executive
• Provide a sense of personal achievement for the advancement of one's career.

Benefits of accreditation
• Recognition of professional ability by fellow catering executives, employers and the public.
• Potential for increased career opportunities in the catering industry.
• Greater expertise in the catering profession.
• Prestige of being one of the select group who earned the right to use the CPCE designation

Achieving the CPCE certification was a personal goal which was achieved in 2002. I am honored to be the only person in the State of Hawaii that has this certification, which can be verified on the NACE national website link below
http://www.nace.net/html/cpce/hawaii.html

I am also honored to be the Honolulu NACE Chapter President and understand that continued education is important to keep abreast of the latest catering trends and being able to better service my valued clients.

What are you passionate about?

For those of you reading this post, hopefully you're passionate about your wedding planning and enjoying this special time in your life.

This evening I had the pleasure of meeting Lisa Light, a wedding planner from New York that does weddings all over the world for those that have the $250,000+ budgets to work with.

In addition to her many travels, what intrigued me the most was when she said that you have to have passion to do what we do. It is so very true, I've seen many catering managers "burn out" and unfortunately this filters down to their client.

I love event planning, it is simply a part of me and I am always looking for new ideas whether it be while shopping or in my quest for continued education opportunities in the special events industry.

Last year I went to the Smithsonian Institute and with 18 museums at my footstep, what caught my eye the most was the gala dinners which were held at the White House. I loved looking at all the pictures, set-ups, chinaware, centerpieces, etc., everybody else thought I was crazy.

This year, I attended The Special Events in Dallas, TX and also the National Associaton of Catering Executives (NACE) Educational Conference in Phoenix, AZ. The opportunity to meet with mainland vendors and the nation's top event planners
is truly priceless.

Dianna Shitanishi featured in People Who Make Hawaii Work

Dianna Shitanishi has opened Hawaii Weddings and Events, a new event-planning company.

She is the former director of catering and conference services at the Kahala Mandarin Oriental Hawaii.

Shitanishi, 42, has coordinated more than 800 weddings and special events during her 20 years in the hospitality industry. She has planned President George W. Bush's Honolulu layover visit, a press conference for golfer Michelle Wie and a number of other events for Hawaii's business executives.

She also has worked in numerous positions at Waikiki hotels and airport hotel properties.

Why I started the business: I've always dreamed of having my own business and I love event planning. It allows me more flexibility with my schedule to spend time with my children.

Immediate priority: Developing my business and creating new theme events.

Essential business philosophy: Everything is about quality and servicing the guest and making sure they get the experience that they anticipate -- putting customers at ease through the event-planning process.

Best way to keep the competitive edge: Continually learning. I go to educational conferences every year to keep up with current trends.

Best business decision: Starting my own business. It allows more creativity. I have the opportunity to not only work at one property, now I get to work with different people in the industry.

Worst business decision: It's not having my own office, because there are some clients who expect to meet at an office.

Longer-term challenge: We're looking at expanding to the Neighbor Islands, so developing that market will be a challenge because I'm physically not there and also because of the tight labor market.

Biggest problem in the industry: Not everybody is reputable. Just making sure that you're getting value for the price that's paid and ensuring you have quality goods.

Strategy to overcome industry problem: Educating your clients as to what things to look for. As far as my business, I'm a firm believer in not putting all your eggs in one basket. So it's working with a number of individuals and companies and diversifying.

Goal yet to be achieved: Continuing my public relations efforts. That's something I'm slowly working on.

Favorite way to spend free time: Watching my kids play sports.

Stress reducer: Walking and spending time with friends.

Word that best describes me: Detailed.

Vendor suggestions......

Aloha!

Based on some comments from some of my brides during interviews and finalization meetings, I thought I would share some comments and/or suggestions for vendors to consider.

1) No matter how small a business may be, you should always present yourself in a professional manner. A bride of mine actually showed me a handwritten note torn out of a spiral notebook that was sent to her along with a "blank" contract that had no fees written in. Needless to say, the person that sent it will not get the job no matter how good their services may be.

2) Response time or no response at all! Quite a few brides have expressed their frustration with the lack of response from vendors, unfortunately, I have also encountered the same experience at times. They understand that they are busy, but would at least appreciate a little note, got your e-mail, will get back to you by __________ date. I make it a point to communicate with my clients when I will be out on appointments all day, or perhaps on a trip. At least that way, they understand there may be a delay in responding and they appreciate that I let them know, or at least give them an estimated time for an answer.

3) Matching your client to vendors. Everyone has a different budget, style and personality. As a wedding professional it is important to try and match your client with those professionals that will best suit THEIR needs.

4) LISTEN.......let the bride and groom talk so they can convey their ideas before offering your suggestions. How can you service them if you haven't found out about what they like and don't like?

Food for thought.....

The reason you want a "day of" coordinator......

I just received this e-mail from a July 2006 groom, it really summed up one of the many reasons for hiring a "day of" wedding coordinator.

"I am a very organized person and we wanted to have the ability to plan our own wedding, so we did not hire a wedding coordinator to do any pre-wedding planning for us.

However, it occurred to me that even though I'm very organized, I'll probably be too busy on wedding day itself to be trying to manage the many little details and issues that are likely to come up, given that we'll be running around with our photographer taking pictures, etc. As a result, we thought it might make sense to hire a professional coordinator, not to do all of the pre-wedding planning and vendor finding (which is all done), but rather simply to attend our rehearsal and our finalization meeting with the catering manager and to oversee things and be the focal point for our vendors on the wedding day itself."

Tips for planning your destination wedding!

So you've finally decided to plan your destination wedding, so what now?

Having planned weddings from all over the world since 1997, I am pleased to provide you with a few tips:

1) If you hire a photographer that is not from the location where you are having your wedding be sure to have them do a walk through of the grounds to ensure they are familiar with all of the picture opportunities available.

2) Don't worry about having to plan your wedding via e-mail, voicemail and/or fax. Even with local weddings, 90% of the planning process is done via technology due to time limitations, ease of use and the fact that everything is in writing so you have everything documented.

3) Always request at least two proposals on items which are more personal (ie: flowers, pictures, videography, etc.) as these items in particular represent the style that you are looking for.

4) Ensure that you arrive at your destination in time to secure your wedding license (in Hawaii you can obtain your license up to 30 days prior to the wedding) and to give yourself some time to get acclimated to both the time zone and climate of your destination.

5) Schedule an appointment with your wedding planner for one "final review" of all details upon arrival at your destination. Everything will be set at this point in time, but it will do your heart good to walk through it again and put your mind at ease, and for some, it allows you to meet your coordinator "face to face" for the first time.

6) Enjoy this special time, it should be a fun and exciting time in your life, not a stressful one!

What is a wedding planner and do I really need one?

This is the number one question asked from brides from all over the world.

Not that long ago, wedding consultants were thought of as a luxury to be used mainly by the elite, but in today’s world, over sixty percent of couples use the services of a wedding consultant, commonly referred to a “wedding coordinator” or “wedding planner” and the numbers steadily grow.

So what is a wedding planner? She/he is a specialist that plans weddings or assists in the planning of weddings on a professional basis. Wedding consultants have vast knowledge of the products, services, and vendors available in the area and can recommend those which are a perfect match for the couple's "vision" and style, saving them endless research time and opening up a world of possibilities. Often they can suggest unique or hard to find services or products which are perfect for the couple, but which the couple would have been very unlikely to find on their own. The coordinator can be involved to any extent the bride desires - as much or as little as is required.

A consultant does not take over the planning of your wedding for you (unless, of course, you want her to), but rather, she/he advises you and assists you so that you have the all the information you need for the most spectacular wedding possible on a budget you can afford, and then you make all the final decisions.

A wedding planner is a very organized and detailed person with a superb sense of style and becomes your advocate, advisor, counselor and often “new best friend” all rolled in one. There are endless details to arrange, many logistics to organize, large numbers of vendors and service providers to hire, schedules, timelines (one of the most critical aspects of the day) and budgets to manage, and as a result so much room for oversights to occur and for things to go wrong.

The reality is that few couples have the level of time in their schedules required to successfully plan, manage and executive such an event effectively; unfortunately, however, many couples don’t realize or acknowledge this until it is too late when parts of their wedding dream has already disintegrated into disappointment.

In recent surveys, 72% of married brides who did not use a wedding coordinator for their weddings said that based on their experience, if they could do it all over again they would indeed hire a wedding coordinator to assist in the planning process, or at least be on hand to supervise the wedding day itself.

Most consultants offer couples a free initial consultation so the bride and groom can learn how the consultant can make their wedding better, and then decide whether hiring a consultant is right for them. Sitting down with a wedding planner for a free consultation is the best way to learn of the many benefits to be had in using his or her services and to learn a little about each other, and determine what your specific needs are.

Couples can choose from a wide range of service levels, with the wedding consultant doing as much, or as little, as the couple would like. A bride and groom may choose to hire a wedding consultant simply for one 'planning power session' to get their wedding plans off to an amazing start; or they may hire the consultant to oversee the planning from start to finish. As yet another option, there is an increasing number of requests from couples opting at the very least to use the services of a wedding coordinator just on the wedding day itself, so that nothing is left to chance.

With all of the costs involved in producing a wedding in the first place, the fee for on site services of a coordinator on the big day is a small price to pay to ensure that, when the crunch comes down, everything unfolds as it should, just as you planned.

After all, you only get one shot at the biggest day of your life. Only one chance to make it amazing... why take the risk?

Can I really plan a wedding in a month?

With today's technology, and the increasing number of wedding professionals today, the answer is yes, in fact, there are some people that fall in love with the islands and decide to get married while here on vacation.

The most difficult process is making decisions, sometimes with shorter lead times, that becomes easier because you don't keep toggling back and forth with ideas.

The most important thing to remember is that it is YOUR wedding and you make it what you want it to be, and to truly absorb and enjoy the day!
