For those of you that may not have heard, the Royal Hawaiian Hotel announced today that it would be closing for renovations June 1, 2008.

The "Pink Palace of the Pacific" has always held a special place in my heart. I was fortunate to work at the hotel from 1992 to 1996 prior to going to the Kahala Mandarin Oriental, Hawaii (now The Kahala Hotel and Resort).

The reason I actually left the Royal Hawaiian Hotel was simply because I had found my passion for Catering and I didn't foresee the Director of Catering or Catering Manager leaving anytime soon. Fortunately my gamble paid off as I started in Food and Beverage at the Kahala and then moved to Catering Manager, Director of Weddings and Director of Catering and Conference Services and now the proud owner of Hawaii Weddings and Events.

After being away from the beautiful historic property for over 10 years I now returned on-site as the coordinator for two beautiful weddings September 15 and 16, 2007, of which both had receptions in the Monarch Room

Considering I would have waited 9 years for an opening at the Royal, it was fun to be on-site and work side by side along the banquet manager, banquet staff and catering team that I used to work with. When I pass by the front desk I remember the short period of time that I actually worked as a Night Auditor on the graveyard shift.
