Finding the Perfect Wedding Gown: Hem & Train Lengths

The more knowledge you have about wedding gowns when you go shopping, the easier it will be to pick the perfect dress. Knowing the different terms for hem and train lengths will help narrow down you search considerably.

First, the hem length is the length from the waist to the hem line in front of the gown. Hemline varieties include:
Floor - the hem reaches to the floor. It is the most common style.
Tea - the hem hits mid-calf. Perfect for outdoor, casual weddings
Intermission - or Midi length. It ends between the knee and mid-calf.
Handkerchief - the hem ends mid-calf. It is made of layered panels that end in a v-point.
Street - the hem reaches to just below the knee.
Mini- the hem ends above the knee. Often includes a removable overskirt.

Second, the train length is measured from the waist to the hem in the back of the gown. Train lengths include:
No train means that the front and the back hem of the gown match, typically they are floor length.
The Chapel length is the most common with the train measuring about 4 feet from the waistline.
The Semi-Cathedral length is about 5 to 6 feet long measuring from the waist to the hem.
The Cathedral length is perfect for a formal wedding with a train of 7 feet measured from the waist. This train typically can be bustled or is removable.
The Royal length, also known as the Monarch, is the most formal of all trains and extends 9 feet from the waistline to the hem.
