Deciding on the menu for your wedding reception can be daunting if you've never planned a meal for a large group of people.
You'll want to think about what time the meal will be served. Are you planning on an afternoon, outdoor event? If so, maybe a light buffet would fit your wedding ambiance. Or, if you are planning an evening reception, you may want to plan a formal sit down meal.
Also, you'll want to look at your budget. Your caterer can give you an idea of how much specific foods will cost per person. If you're envisioning filet mignon and your budget is only $5 per person, you may need to re-think the steak. More affordable menu ideas include a dessert bar or only serving appetizers.
Traditionally, couples serve hot and cold menu items. Many couples are also considering including non-red meat options as well as a vegetarian meal.
Once you and your fiance have chosen menu items that you both enjoy, look at the entire proposed menu to see if you've left any items out. Also, have a bridesmaid or the mother of the bride look over it to see if anything is missing.
One final note, always ask your caterer to sample the reception menu. You won't want any menu surprises on the wedding day.
