DIANNA K. SHITANISHI FORMS HAWAII WEDDINGS AND EVENTS

Dianna K. Shitanishi, former director of catering and conference services at the Kahala Mandarin Oriental, Hawaii, has formed a new event company called Hawaii Weddings and Events.

Headquartered in Hawaii Kai, the new venture draws on Shitanishi's expertise. She has coordinated over 800 weddings and countless special events, theme parties, graduation celebrations, fundraisers and galas during her 20-plus years in the hospitality industry. Among the events coordinated by Shitanishi have been President George W. Bush's Honolulu layover visit, a press conference for Michelle Wie, the AAA Five Diamonds Award Dinner, Chaine des Rotisseurs dinner, and numerous off-premise events for Hawaiiﾹs top business professionals.

President of the Honolulu chapter of the National Association of Catering Executives (NACE), she also is a member of Les Dames dﾹEscoffier and is the only person in Hawaii to hold both the distinctions of CPCE (Certified Professional Catering Executive) and CMP (Certified Meeting Planner). She won the 2005 Best Themed Food and Beverage Presentation award at the National Association of Catering Executives Educational Conference.

Her experience also includes serving as director of weddings,
catering/conference services manager for the Kahala Mandarin and earlier
positions with the Sheraton Royal Hawaiian Hotel, Sheraton Princess Kaiulani Hotel, Holiday Inn Waikiki Beach, Holiday Inn Honolulu Airport and Plaza Hotel Airport.

I once had a wedding where the groom asked "well, are you going to do it?" The bride smiled and said YES and then she walked in to the ocean about 30 feet with her beautiful sequined train floating on the water. She then walked back to the beach and started singing alongside the Hawaiian guitarist. I took her train, which weighed a ton and was full of sand, to housekeeping and said "don't ask, just clean it and send it back to her room." That was the way she envisioned her special day and that was all that really mattered as she fulfilled her dream!

Walking on the beach with the sound between your toes and the sound of the ocean has to be one of my favorites. I also enjoy watching my kids play sports and event planning, which may sound crazy to enjoy work, but when you love what you do then it isn't considered a job!

I definitely could not live without my computer!

It is hard to narrow it down to one, I love watching romance movies over and over again, "Serendipity" is probably first followed by "A Walk to Remember" and "Sweet November"

We actually never had a chance to go on a honeymoon. Our best man had lost his car keys, so our exciting "limousine" ride was taking him back to his house and back.

I would love to to meet Oprah. I truly admire all that she has accomplished considering her challenging upbringing, how she elevated her talk show above everyone else's and how she uses her success to continually help others through the Angel Network, Leadership Academy and many other great projects.

Another person I would love to work with is Colin Cowie who actually came to one of our NACE conferences. I love the fact that he gives the "Target" budget ideas (now all I need is a Target Store!)

I'm definitely a dog person and would love to have a golden retriever but unfortunately can't have pets where I live.

My number one goal is giving my children the opportunity to go to college as I never had that opportunity. I worked my up through the ranks and eventually went back to school to earn my certifications.
